I was zooming in on a recovery meeting and the topic was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I have heard the alcoholic or addict compared to this before…but I had never really looked into it.
I learned this: Dr. Jekyll was a kind, well respected, intelligent scientist who for some reason wanted to explore his dark side…his alter ego.
So the good doctor made a potion that when he drank it he would become Mr. Hyde; an evil being who does not accept responsibility for his evil crimes and ways.
In the end Dr Jekyll drinks the potion and gets stuck as Mr. Hyde. He cannot stand himself as this so he commits suicide.
This IS the active alcoholic. This IS the active drug addict.
After ingesting the substance (the potion) we feel we are stuck…suicide becomes and option.
