My name

Where did your name come from?

The name Kenneth has Gaelic origins and is an Anglicized form of two different Gaelic names: Cainnech and Cináed. The modern Gaelic form of Cainnech is Coinneach, which means “handsome” or “comely”1. Cináed, on the other hand, is derived from the Celtic word for “fire” or “lord”1.

The name was popularized by Kenneth mac Alpin, a 9th-century Scottish king who united the Scots and Picts2. It gained further popularity outside of Scotland through Sir Walter Scott’s 1825 novel, The Talisman2.
