Dame Cleo Laine

what a towering figure in British jazz and theatre. 🎶 Born Clementine Dinah Hitching in 1927, she became renowned for her four-octave vocal range and signature scat singing style. Her career spanned decades, from early performances with her husband Sir John Dankworth to Grammy-winning recordings and Broadway roles like Princess Puffer in The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

She was the first British jazz artist to be made a Dame, receiving the honour in 1997. Her collaborations included legends like Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and Dudley Moore, and she even appeared on The Muppet Show in 1977.

Sadly, she passed away on 24 July 2025 at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped British jazz and inspired generations. Her children, Alec and Jacqui Dankworth, continue her musical lineage.
