The Sycamore Gap tree

The Sycamore Gap tree was a famous and much-photographed sycamore that stood next to Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, England. It was often called the Robin Hood tree because it appeared in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The tree was around 150 years old and won the 2016 England Tree of the Year award.

Sadly, the tree was illegally felled in September 2023, which led to widespread outrage and sadness. Two men were arrested and later charged with criminal damage to both the tree and Hadrian’s Wall. Their trial began in April 2025, and new details have emerged about the case, including accusations that one suspect tried to blame the other in an anonymous call to police3.

Despite the damage, the stump has sprouted new growth, meaning the tree is still alive, though it will take over 150 years to fully recover. The National Trust and conservationists are considering ways to preserve its legacy.
